Ambar Escudero - Academic Writing

During the duration of this course imparted by Teacher Sofia Fernandez from February 13th, 2016 to May 21st, 2016, we learned about Academic writing, how to research reliable sources, and do a proper research paper. Academic writing refers to a particular style of expression that researchers use to define the intellectual boundaries of their disciplines and their areas of expertise.

Characteristics of academic writing include a formal tone, use of the third-person rather than first-person perspective, a clear focus on the research problem under investigation, and precise word choice. Like specialist languages adopted in other professions, such as, law or medicine, academic writing is designed to convey agreed meaning about complex ideas or concepts for a group of scholarly experts. There are several important stylistic elements:

·         The Big Picture: it should have a formal and logical structure.
·         The tone: should be in an appropriate narrative tone
·         Diction: this talks about the words that we decide to use.
·         The Language: Well-structured paragraphs and clear topic sentences make it easier for the reader to understand the document.
·         Academic Conventions: Citing sources in the body of your paper and providing a list of references as either footnotes or endnotes is a very important aspect of academic writing

And as a final evaluation we had to do an investigation and do some research regarding a topic we preferred. For my paper I investigated the topic “Benefits of Electronic Cigarettes” You can find the link below to the research paper.
